Board-Level Laptop, Motherboard & GPU Repair — Newcastle & Hunter Valley

Don't replace it until we've checked whether it can be repaired.

ITAR provides board-level repair, servicing and fault diagnosis for customers and businesses across Newcastle, the Hunter Valley, Maitland, Lake Macquarie, the Central Coast and Port Stephens.

Many devices that appear “dead” are repairable. No power, charging faults, damaged ports, liquid damage, overheating, failed components and shorted boards can often be diagnosed and repaired for far less than the cost of replacement.

Before you throw it out, replace it, or send it to e-waste — let us assess it properly.

What We Repair

Board-level repair and servicing for a wide range of IT equipment: laptops, desktop motherboards, gaming PCs, graphics cards and GPUs, mini PCs, NUC-style systems, consoles, and business IT equipment.

If a device is faulty, intermittent, not powering on, overheating, not charging, or has already been written off by someone else, it may still be worth repairing.

Common Faults We Diagnose and Repair

You don’t need to know exactly what’s failed — most customers describe the problem by what the device is doing, and that’s fine.

We commonly assess and repair: devices that won’t turn on, no power or charging faults, loose or damaged charging ports, failed USB-C charging, computers that power on then shut off, overheating and loud fans, loose or damaged hinges, graphics cards with no display, gaming PCs that crash or shut down, damaged motherboards, liquid spill damage and corrosion, burn marks, damaged USB/HDMI/LAN ports, impact damage, and failed previous repair attempts.

We also carry out deeper board-level diagnosis where required — power fault tracing, short-circuit diagnosis, component testing, microscope inspection, thermal fault finding, connector replacement, firmware/BIOS work, and PCB-level repairs.

Servicing and Preventative Maintenance

Not every repair needs to be a major board-level job — many computers fail early simply because they’ve never been properly serviced.

We provide hardware servicing including internal dust removal, fan and heatsink cleaning, thermal paste replacement, hinge tightening and adjustment, connector and port inspection, cooling checks, and storage/RAM checks.

A proper service can reduce overheating, improve reliability, reduce fan noise, and extend the useful life of your equipment.

We also offer combined hardware and software servicing for a more complete check-up — hardware cleaning and inspection alongside software-level checks for startup problems, OS issues, driver faults, storage health and performance.

Pricing

ServicePrice
Diagnosis / deposit fee$60 (deducted from final repair cost if you proceed)
Hardware service$90 (physical inspection, internal clean-out, full internal refurbishment)
Hardware + software service                                      $150 (hardware service plus software-level checks and system health review)

Board-level repairs are quoted after diagnosis — final cost depends on the device, fault, parts and time involved. We’ll always quote before carrying out work, and if a repair isn’t economical, we’ll tell you honestly.

Why Component-Level Repair?

The repair industry — and the tech industry — has drifted toward replacing entire assemblies when a single component has failed. A shorted MOSFET replaces a $400 graphics card. A failed charging IC means a new motherboard. A blown capacitor writes off a $2,000 laptop.

We don’t think that’s right. You wouldn’t throw your car away because it has a flat tyre — or replace the entire engine because it needs new spark plugs. The same logic applies to your tech.

We’ve fixed $2,000+ laptops with a single $2 SMD component. That’s the repair that matters.

Component-level repair takes more skill and more time than swapping an assembly — but it keeps working technology out of landfill, and puts money back in your pocket.

Diagnosis, Repair Findings and Records

Booking a device in for diagnosis gets you more than a quick guess. We supply a written repair record covering reported symptoms, condition on receipt, diagnostic findings, likely root cause, repair options, pricing, parts used, work completed, and final testing results.

This gives you clear information on what was found, what was done, and the outcome — useful for business customers tracking assets, warranty, insurance or maintenance history.

Turnaround

We aim to diagnose most devices within 24 hours. Repair time depends on the fault, parts availability and complexity — some jobs are straightforward, others need deeper board-level testing or donor parts. Urgent repairs are available for customers who need equipment assessed quickly.

Our Repair Process

  1. Bring the device in or book a repair date/time.
  2. We confirm symptoms, inspect, and carry out initial testing — board-level diagnosis if required.
  3. We provide a quote before any repair work proceeds.
  4. If accepted, we complete the repair or service, test the device, and provide a written record.
  5. If a device isn’t economical to repair, we’ll advise you honestly and, where appropriate, recycle it responsibly through ITAR.

Repair where practical. Refurbish where possible. Recycle responsibly when equipment genuinely can’t be saved.

Data Recovery From Dead Devices

In many cases, data can still be recovered from a laptop or desktop that no longer powers on. If the equipment is dead but you need the files, photos or records from it, bring it in for assessment — we can usually determine whether the storage is accessible or whether deeper recovery work is needed.

Why Choose ITAR

ITAR isn’t just another computer repair shop. We work with IT equipment every day — individual laptops through to business-grade systems, failed hardware, recycled equipment, donor boards and component-level repairs.

Our focus is reuse first: if a device can be repaired and kept in service, that’s almost always better than replacing it or sending it to e-waste.

Data security is core to how we operate — our processes support our ongoing work with Commonwealth and NSW Government organisations, including NSW Health and NSW Police Force, alongside businesses and community organisations that need careful handling of data-bearing devices.

Repair Before You Replace

The IT industry — and much of the repair industry itself — has fallen into a habit of replacing entire assemblies when a single component has failed. A failed charging circuit means a new motherboard. A blown capacitor means a new power supply. A bad MOSFET means a new graphics card.

You wouldn’t throw your car away because it has a flat tyre. You wouldn’t replace the engine because it needs new spark plugs. So why replace a $2,000 laptop because a $2 capacitor has failed?

At ITAR, we work at the component level. We’ve repaired laptops, motherboards and GPUs where the entire fault came down to a single dead SMD component — a capacitor, MOSFET, fuse or charging IC. A $2 part and 30 minutes of skilled work, and a device worth $2,000 or more is back in service. That’s the repair we believe in: fix the actual fault, don’t replace the assembly.

Before you spend hundreds — or thousands — on a replacement, bring it to us for an honest assessment.
